The case against PARAQUAT:
Syngenta's side of the story
To questions concerning user safety, Syngenta had this to say in their report «Gramoxone extra» (Gramoxone is Syngenta's paraquat brand):
«The fundamental knowledge concerning the behavior of paraquat confirms that the health of professional applicators of Gramoxone is not in danger, provided they handle Gramoxone as instructed.
The body part most often exposed to herbicides is the skin. However, healthy, undamaged skin is the best natural barrier against the absorption of paraquat. If used according to instructions, paraquat cannot be absorbed through the lungs. Long-term studies of animals show that the active ingredient does not accumulate in the body.
These facts were confirmed through lab tests, field tests and in-depth studies of people who have handled paraquat for years. After more than 30 years, no fatalities have been recorded anywhere in the world as a result of the use of Gramoxone, when applied according to instructions.»
